Type 054A Frigate

The Type 054A is the People’s Republic of China’s (PRC) newest frigate. Currently being build by Hudong-Zhonghua and Huangpu Shipyards, the vessel is a step forward in weapons and sensor integration for the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). Although best suited for air-defense missions, Type 054As have successfully supported anti-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden and escort missions in the Mediterranean Sea.

With HQ-16 medium-range surface-air missiles fired from a 32-cell Vertical Launch System (VLS) and two Type 730 seven-barrel 30mm close-in weapon systems (CIWS), a hostile pilot would do well to stay hidden from the vessel’s radar system. For surface targets, the Type 054A boasts two quadruple launchers capable of firing YJ-83 sea-skimming anti-ship cruise missiles and a 76MM single-barrel deck gun. Lastly, the class's anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities come in the form of two Type 87 ASW rocket launchers and two 324mm YU-7 ASW torpedo launchers.

Radar & Sonar Systems

The ship’s eyes and ears are provided by one Type 344 radar, four Type 345 F-band radars, Type 347G fire-control radars, and a MGK-335 medium-frequency active/passive sonar system.

Propulsion

The Type 054A has a range of 8,000 nautical miles (NMI), and a maximum speed of 27 knots. Power is provided by four MAN Diesel 16 PA6V-280 STC engines with a total output of 4,700 kilowatts.
