PEOPLE'S LIBERATION ARMY

OVERVIEW

The Ground Force (PLAGF) has been the main land branch of the People's Liberation Army since 1948. The PLAGF currently has 900,000 active-duty personnel divided between its combat, command, and support units. Composed of 13 Army Groups, 78 Combined-Arms Brigades, 15 Artillery Brigades, 13 Air Assault/Aviation Brigades, and one Mechanized Infantry Division, the Ground Force is an organization to be reckoned with.

Over the years, PLAGF has proven extremely proficient in adapting and reorienting to new operational realities. Although its stated mission is external defense and national security, the organization has been effectively used to preserve internal order and conduct disaster relief operations. While the PLAGF appears to be gaining equivalency with the United States Army, a lack of organizational knowledge and combat experience will serve as a major hindrance throughout next twenty years.
